Austria – Italia 23 Marzo 1958: “La partita della neve”

Il 1958, alla pari del 1966 e del 2018, fu una della annate più nere della nostra nazionale. Il 15 gennaio del 1958 l’Italia, guidata da Alfredo Foni, si presentava alla partita decisiva per la qualificazione ai mondiali contro l’Irlanda del Nord, confidente – con due risultati su tre – di poter conquistare l’accesso ai mondiali di Svezia. Così non fu; gli azzurri vennero sconfitti per 2-1 in quella che venne considerata la prima disfatta della nostra nazionale.

Qualche mese dopo, rinnovati nei ranghi in quella che fu definita una formazione “sperimentale”, gli azzurri incontrarono al Prater di Vienna l’Austria per una partita valevole per la Coppa Internazionale, trofeo continentale antesignano dei Campionati Europei, che evocava il dolce ricordo delle due vittorie italiane.

Un simpatico aneddoto è legato al trofeo che premiava i vincitori di questa competizione e al mitico Vittorio Pozzo.

Infatti la leggenda narra che il trofeo assegnato all’Italia, nella sua prima edizione disputata tra il 1927 e il 1930 si ruppe e che Vittorio Pozzo ne conservò un piccolo frammento, come un talismano portafortuna, portandolo con se in ognuna della partite in cui diresse, magistralmente, gli azzurri.

“Il Calcio e il Ciclismo Illustrato” ben dettaglia quella partita titolando in prima pagina “Tre minuti fatali” quelli che appunto costarono all’Italia una immeritata sconfitta per 3-2

Oltre all’amaro della sconfitta la partita venne disputa in condizioni al limite, o forse anche oltre, in un campo totalmente ricoperto dalla neve e con un freddo intenso a cui, comunque, si sottoposero di buon grado i sessantamila spettatori. Una partita d’altri tempi immortalata dalla stampa nei minimi dettagli e anche attraverso la “storica matita” di Carmelo Silva, oltre che il topico momento della consegna, da parte di Boniperti, del gagliardetto azzurro al capitano austriaco Hanappi.

AUSTRIA – ITALY 23th MARCH 1958. “THE SNOW GAME”

1958, on a par with 1966 and 2018, was one of the blackest vintages of our national team. On 15 January 1958, Italy, led by Alfredo Foni, appeared in the decisive match for the World Cup qualifier against Northern Ireland, confident – with two out of three results – that they could gain access to the World Cup in Sweden. That was not the case; the Azzurri were defeated 2-1 in what was considered the first defeat of our national team.

A few months later, renewed in the ranks in what was called an “experimental” line up, the Azzurri met Austria at the Prater in Vienna for a match valid for the International Cup, continental trophy forerunner of the European Championships, which evoked the sweet memory of the two Italian victories.

A nice anecdote is linked to the trophy that rewarded the winners of this competition and to the legendary Vittorio Pozzo. In fact, legend has it that the trophy awarded to Italy, in its first edition held between 1927 and 1930 broke and that Vittorio Pozzo kept a small fragment, like a lucky talisman, taking him with him to each of the matches in which he masterfully directed the Azzurri.

“Il Calcio e il Ciclismo Illustrato” well details that match by headlined on the front page “Three fatal minutes” those that cost Italy an undeserved 3-2 defeat. In addition to the bitterness of the defeat, the match was played in conditions on the edge, or perhaps even beyond, in a field totally covered by snow and with an intense cold to which, however, sixty thousand spectators were happy to submit. A match of the past immortalized by the press in detail and also through the “historic pencil” of Carmelo Silva, as well as the topical moment in which Boniperti presented the Italian pennant to the Austrian captain Hanappi.
